Dr Andy Higgs is an consultant in ICM & Anaesthesia and it thepast Clinical Director of Anaesthesia & ICM. 

He served two terms as Hon. Treasurer of DAS (2014-2021) and chaired joint DAS - Intensive Care Society - Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine – RCoA working party which produced guidelines for intubation in critically ill adults, 2018. These represent the UK airway and critical care communities’ response to the findings, in NAP4, of sub-optimal airway management in ICUs and in EDs. 

Andy was on the organising committee for 2nd World Airway Management Meeting, Amsterdam 2019. 

He has co-authored DAS ICS AAGBI FICM RCoA guidelines (adult & paediatric) for airway management in COVID19 & the National Patient Safey Improvement Programme COVID19 Tracheostomy guideline, 2020.  
Chapters in US & UK/EU airway textbooks & MOOCs. 

Other achievements are

  • PUMA executive, producing an international, multi-disciplinary, consolidated guideline for airway management. 
  • Ex-officio executive of Safe Airway Society, Australia. 
  • Member of working party updating DAS 2015 guideline.
  • Co-authored PUMA / international airway societies Preventing Unrecognised Oesophageal Intubation guideline, 2022.
  • Author DAS Extubation Guideline (2012). 

Andy trained in Liverpool (UK) and Melbourne, Australia.
