Head of the Department of Colorectal Surgery at John Hunter Hospital Newcastl

Mr Steve Smith graduated from the University of New South Wales in 1993. He completed general surgical training in 2001. He completed his colorectal CSSANZ Fellowship in 2003 with stints at RPA, Sydney and Western, Melbourne. He completed a Masters of Surgery (Colorectal) in 2005 through Sydney University. He has also completed a PhD on enhanced recovery after colorectal surgery through The University of Newcastle in 2015 and was the recipient of the Hugh Johnson travelling RACS scholar to the USA in 2013 based on his work in ERAS. 
Steve is the head of the department of colorectal surgery at John Hunter Hospital Newcastle, the director of surgical training Hunter New England health network and the director of surgical clinical research John Hunter Hospital.
His area of interest in perioperative medicine lies in investigating the three pillars of recovery following colorectal surgery (gut function, analgesia and SSI) and identifying perioperative interventions to improve recovery through the medium of the randomized clinical trial.
