Ms Samantha Bates is a Critical Care Research Manager with the Department of Intensive Care, Anaesthesia, Pain and Perioperative Medicine at Western Health, Melbourne, Australia. She has a critical care nursing background, and has been a critical care research nurse/manager for the past 15 years. Sam’s extensive research experience has seen her working on dozens of landmark, influential trials in critical care.

Sam holds an honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer appointment with the Centre for Integrated Critical Care, Melbourne Medical School, The University of Melbourne. She is Chair of the ANZICS-CTG Intensive Care Research Coordinator Interest Group (IRCIG); executive member (VIC state rep) of the ANZCA CTN Anaesthesia Research Coordinator Network (ARCN) Sub-committee, and an executive member of the Victorian Association of Research Nurses (VARN).

Western Health ICUs received the highest number of COVID-19 patients during Australia’s second pandemic wave, and Sam was instrumental in conducting a phase I clinical device trial of a ventilation hood to help protect healthcare workers from COVID-19 aerosol exposure. She now has added skill sets to her professional portfolio that she never envisaged needing and would be delighted to give you some insights of the ventilation hood research journey.
