Changes to exam fees

01 December 2023

ANZCA has been working on a process to support trainees who are unsuccessful in gaining an invitation to the vivas by refunding a portion of their examination fee.

The September ANZCA Council meeting approved a 20 per cent refund of the examination fee to be retrospectively applied from the 2023.2 sitting of both the primary and final exam. This amount was determined in consultation with ANZCA’s Finance unit, taking into account the relatively fixed cost of running the viva component of the examination.

Trainees will be refunded directly via the method by which they made the original examination payment. We are aware the New Zealand trainee fees are usually reimbursed by Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand. Payments back to the health system will be the responsibility of the individual trainee.

Payments for the 2023.2 exams will be processed over the next four to six weeks. From the 2024.1 examinations, refunds will be completed within six to eight weeks of the written component.

It is hoped that this new measure will assist trainees financially and foster wellbeing at a stressful time.
