Perioperative Medicine SIG

The Perioperative Medicine Special Interest Group (SIG) has three aims which include, to improve patient safety and outcomes, to share knowledge and collaborate with specialty groups and to develop the specialty of perioperative medicine with various craft groups.

Future meetings

The Perioperative Medicine SIG will hold the following meetings in 2021.

  • A joint Perioperative Medicine, Airway Management and Obstetric Anaesesthsia SIG meeting will be held on Thursday 29 April 2021. This will be held as a satelitte meeting to the ANZCA Annual Scientific Meeting in Melbourne. Registrations will open in November 2020.
  • The Perioperative Medicine Special Interest Group (SIG) meeting will be held at the Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach from 12-14 August 2021. Registrations will be open from late 2020.

The Australian and New Zealand Emergency Laparotomy Audit - Quality Improvement (ANZELA-QI)

ANZELA-QI, co-led by ANZCA and RACS, is a bi-national, multi-centre project that aims to improve perioperative care of patients undergoing emergency laparotomy. There is a compelling case for a high quality, prospective audit to help drive quality improvement for this at-risk patient cohort. Similar initiatives internationally have demonstrated significantly enhanced processes of care and reduction in mortality. Already, the project has enrolled 50 hospitals across both countries, and is hoping for more centres to join.

For further information and participation, visit the ANZELA-QI website.
