Professor David A. Scott MB, BS, PhD, FANZCA, FFPMANZCA, FCAI

 

David A Scott is Director of Anaesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, and a Professor in the University of Melbourne’s Department of Critical Care, in the Faculty of Medicine.
 
He has had a career-long interest in acute pain management, including neuropathic pain, and he established and led the Acute Pain Service at St Vincent's from 1990 to 2009.
 
Professor Scott’s current research focusses on patient outcomes, and includes studies in acute pain, safety of postoperative opioids, patient blood management, and in particular, the neurocognitive effects of anaesthesia and surgery - especially cardiac surgery. This area of Professor Scott’s work includes a special focus on delirium, the role of inflammation, and how a multidisciplinary approach to perioperative care may improve outcomes for patients.
 
He is the Australian Chief Investigator for the Transfusion Requirements in Cardiac Surgery in Younger Patients (TRICS-IV) study. He is a Chief Investigator on the nationally funded PROTECT trial investigating perioperative optimisation for improved cognitive outcomes.
 
David was the President of ANZCA from 2017 – 2019 and is the current chair of the ANZCA Research Committee.
