ANZCA Council and FPM Board respond to Voice decision

15 October 2023

ANZCA Council and the FPM Board are disappointed that the Voice to Parliament was not supported in the Australian government referendum.

In June, the two bodies issued a statement in support of an Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Voice to Parliament.

Following the decision on 14 October, ANZCA will continue to advocate for our Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Māori fellows and trainees through our Indigenous Health Committee, our Reconciliation Action Plan, our workforce activities, providing culturally safe care, and our advocacy work.

Support for Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Māori peoples is an important component of ANZCA’s 2023-2025 Strategic Plan, ANZCA's purpose in “optimising health” and ANZCA’s constitution to “advance public education and awareness of health equity”. It also aligns with ANZCA Council's 2019: “Statement on the role of ANZCA in advocating for the health and wellbeing of all people”.
