The death of a colleague by suicide or other unexpected circumstances is one of the most distressing events a healthcare team can experience.
To support anaesthesia and pain medicine departments during these difficult times, ANZCA has developed this practical, compassionate guidance document to help leaders and teams respond with clarity, care and sensitivity.
Authored by wellbeing consultant and experienced clinical social worker Dr Liz Crowe, the guidance document provides a structured framework for navigating the immediate, short-term and longer-term impacts of a colleague’s death, with a focus on:
- Respectful and sensitive communication
- Staff wellbeing and psychological safety
- Confidentiality and legal obligations
- Cultural and contextual considerations
- Coordinated organisational support
The resource also outlines the support ANZCA can provide to impacted departments and trainees, including rapid response wellbeing services and exam flexibility options.
This guidance is supported by a comprehensive internal college process to ensure we are well prepared to respond quickly, consistently and compassionately, and to best support our members and staff during these difficult times.
It has been informed by evidence, real-world experience, and extensive consultation. We sincerely thank all those who supported the development of this resource and generously gave their time, expertise and insights throughout the consultation process.
