The 2026 anaesthesia and pain medicine trainee survey will open in late October 2026. It will give all ANZCA and FPM trainees an opportunity to share their experiences and help inform ongoing improvements to training. The 2026 survey builds on the approach introduced in 2025 to explore key aspects of the trainee experience.
This year’s survey will cover:
- Trainee support.
- Supervision.
- Communication to and from the college.
- Cultural safety.
Selected questions from the 2025 survey will also be repeated to help ANZCA and FPM monitor changes in trainee experiences over time.
What you need to know
Every response matters
Trainee feedback plays an important role in informing discussions, decisions and improvement initiatives across the college.
Broad participation from trainees at all training levels and across different training settings is essential to the integrity of the survey. A strong response rate increases confidence that the findings accurately capture the experiences of the trainee cohort. It also helps ensure we can take meaningful action in response to the findings.
It's confidential and independent
The survey will be administered by Kantar, an independent research agency. Individual responses are anonymous and confidential. ANZCA and FPM will only receive de-identified, aggregated results.
It's quick and easy to complete
The online survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete and can be accessed from any device. Survey invitations will be emailed directly by Kantar late October 2026. The survey will remain open until early December 2026. We have extended the time available to complete the survey to ensure all trainees have adequate opportunity to participate.

Frequently asked questions about the ananesthesia and pain medicine trainee survey
All current ANZCA and FPM trainees will be invited to participate.
The survey isn't mandatory. However, we do strongly encourage all trainees to take part in order to help inform improvements to the training program and experience. Every response helps ensure findings accurately represent the experiences of trainees across different training stages and settings. Historically, the survey has been a useful tool for identifying strengths and weaknesses in the training program.
The survey provides a direct opportunity to influence future improvements to training, trainee support and educational initiatives. The stronger the response rate, the more meaningful and representative the findings will be.
The survey will be open to complete from late October to early December 2026. We've extended the time available to complete the survey to ensure all trainees have an opportunity to participate.

The survey has been developed by the Trainee Survey Renewal Project Working Group in consultation with several ANZCA and FPM committees, as well as the Education Unit within ANZCA. There has been extensive work across the college to develop survey questions that elicit positive and tangible improvements to the training program and trainee experience.
For this survey, we've engaged Kantar, a specialist research agency, to administer the survey and analyse the results. Using an experienced research partner supports the confidential management of responses and the delivery of objective, high-quality insights.
Creating a safe environment for honest feedback is a priority. Individual responses will not be reported or shared. Instead, survey results are analysed and reported in aggregated groups, with minimum response thresholds and other privacy safeguards in place to protect trainee anonymity. These measures help ensure trainees can share their experiences openly and with confidence.
Relevant ANZCA and FPM committees, including trainee committees, will receive de-identified and aggregated survey findings. The results will be used to understand trainee experiences, monitor the effectiveness of training, and guide improvements to training programs and the trainee experience.
