Learning objectives

At the end of this interactive evening, participants will be able to:

  1. Formulate a sophisticated pain management plan for a patient with acute pain and obstructive sleep apnoea.
  2. Contrast the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnoea to the physiology during "normal" sleep.
  3. Discuss the complex interplay between opioid-induced ventilatory impairment (OIVI) and OSA.
  4. Employ recent evidence and guidelines on the management of patients with OSA requiring opioids in the acute phase of their management.

Invited speakers

Presenter: Dr Gavin Patullo is a specialist anaesthetist and specialist pain medicine physician. He has a keen interest in the interplay of opioid induced ventilatory impairment and obstructive sleep apnoea. He has published peer reviewed manuscripts in high impact journals exploring the interplay of pharmacology, physiology and pathophysiology involved and the implications for the provision of safe and effective analgesia in this context.

Facilitator: Dr Andrew Weiss is a specialist anaesthetist, specialist pain medicine physician and graduate of the chapter of perioperative medicine. He is the Chair of the NSW regional committee of the faculty of pain medicine and the NSW representative to the FPM scientific meetings committee.
