Speaker

Dr. Robert Wright completed multidisciplinary training in anesthesiology and pain management at the University of Utah in the early 1990s. Shortly thereafter, he had the good fortune of meeting Dr. Nik Bogduk during the formative years of the International Pain & Spine Intervention Society (IPSIS), an encounter that established his foundation in evidence-based interventional techniques.

As an early adopter of intradiscal electrothermal therapy (IDET), his first visit to Australia in 2001 was to introduce the technique at a cadaver laboratory in Perth—beginning his enduring relationship with the Australian pain medicine community. He later collaborated with Dr. Phil Finch to validate heating protocols for Dr. Finch’s invention, the DiscTRODE ionic thermal annuloplasty system. That same year, Dr. Wright developed the DeKompressor device for percutaneous discectomy and selective nuclear extraction in discogenic pain. In 2006, his centre became one of the first in the United States to adopt biacuplasty using the Baylis cooled probe system. Most recently, he invented the first multi-tined RF cannula for pain medicine and adapted it for intradiscal applications and basivertebral nerve ablation.

Dr. Wright was recognized as a Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine (FFPMANZCA) in 2023. He currently practices in Queensland and remains committed to advancing evidence-based interventional pain practice.

We would like to thank our guest speaker who donates many hours of time to organize, prepare and present at this meeting.
