2022 NSW ACE Winter Meeting

How good is your pain management?

“Few things a doctor does are more important than relieving pain...pain is soul destroying. No patient should have to endure intense pain unnecessarily.“

Marcia Angell, American Physician and first woman to be appointed Editor-in-Chief of the New England Journal of Medicine.

It’s good to finally be able to have a face-to-face meeting, and closely scrutinising our post-operative pain management is a good topic for face to face discussion. Pain management is high on our patient’s list of concerns when facing surgery. It has to be effective and safe, and we should seek to minimise adverse effects. How many of our patients are satisfied with their pain management? How many are still using analgesics beyond a reasonable post operative period? Do you know? I am delighted to have a number of highly regarded practitioners in the art of pain management and anaesthesia join us for this meeting, including Professor Pam Macintyre, Conjoint Professor Jennifer Stevens, Dr Charlotte Johnstone, Dr Jane Standen, Dr Gavin Pattullo and Dr Stephen Gibson. This meeting offers a series of lectures and problem-based learning discussions focussed on pain management, as well as a chance to participate in some emergency response workshops. I hope you will take the opportunity to seize the day!
