ANZELA-QI
The Australian and New Zealand Emergency Laparotomy Audit - Quality Improvement (ANZELA-QI), co-led by ANZCA and RACS, is a bi-national, multi-centre project that aims to improve perioperative care of patients undergoing emergency laparotomy. There is a compelling case for a high quality, prospective audit to help drive quality improvement for this at-risk patient cohort. Similar initiatives internationally have demonstrated significantly enhanced processes of care and reduction in mortality. Already, the project has enrolled 50 hospitals across both countries, and is hoping for more centres to join.

The Chapter of Perioperative Medicine has key strategic objectives to promote research, enhance professional development and oversee the quality of the perioperative medicine certification, whilst also fostering cross-specialty collaboration.
The Standards for Perioperative Medicine have been released for a six-month pilot period ending in June 2024. These standards are intended to apply to all medical practitioners whose practice falls within the scope of perioperative medicine. The purpose of these standards is to articulate standards and associated indicators of quality care against which performance can be compared.
