The CVICU Intensivist role provides specialist care to patients in the largest cardiothoracic and vascular intensive care unit in New Zealand. Patients are admitted following acute and elective adult cardiothoracic and vascular surgery of all types, including heart and lung transplantation. The intensive care also provides a national adult ECMO service and the national service for mechanical ventricular support. In addition we provide a regional massive pulmonary embolism service and ICU support for cardiology including out of hospital cardiac arrest patients. Annual ICU admissions are approximately 1200 with 800 HDU admissions.
