Two perioperative medicine health care projects have been recognised in the 2024 Victorian Public Healthcare Awards.
In the category “Excellence in Value-Based Healthcare”, the “Regional Approach to Enhanced Recovery After Surgery and Prehabilitation” project – developed by the West Metro Health Service Partnership (Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Western Health, The Royal Women's Hospital and The Royal Melbourne Hospital) was recognised for its Enhanced Recovery After Surgery plus Prehabilitation (ERAS+) project to improve care for surgical patients.
FANZCA Professor Bernhard Riedel, Director, Department of Anaesthetics, Perioperative Medicine, and Pain Medicine at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre was part of the team that accepted the award in Melbourne this week.
The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre’s six bed enhanced care unit (ECU) received the Safer Care Victoria Award for safety improvement.
The ECU opened in 2023 to provide comprehensive monitoring and extended postoperative support for patients following major cancer surgery. FANZCA Dr Ian Richardson and Dr Sandeep Kusre accepted the award on behalf of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre team.
