Concurrent session - Tuesday 5 May:

Review of PS64 in final stages

The document development group overseeing the formal review of PS64(G) Position statement on environmental sustainability in anaesthesia and pain medicine practice along with its background paper, has made substantial progress. Led by ESN Executive Chair Dr Archana Shrivathsa, significant work has now been completed to review, update and refine both documents. The final stages of internal approval are currently underway, with plans for broader stakeholder consultation scheduled for the first half of 2026. Publication remains anticipated later in 2026.

Reusable theatre caps

Broome Hospital has transitioned to using reusable theatre caps. Supported by strong evidence showing no increased risk of surgical site infections, the change demonstrates that patient safety and environmental responsibility can progress together. The initial rollout is expected to be cost neutral, with long term savings anticipated.

Renewable electricity in hospitals

Since 1 July 2025, 100% of electricity in Victorian public hospitals is derived from renewables. While this only addresses half of Victoria's public hospital energy use (with 50% still coming from gas), this is a big step forward.

National Climate Risk Assessment

Have you heard the phrase, "Climate care is healthcare"? Australia’s first National Climate Risk Assessment, developed by the Australian Climate Service, explains how climate change is already affecting the systems we rely on, and what lies ahead if risks are not addressed.

The assessment establishes a national baseline for adaptation and reinforces the urgency for organisations, sectors and services to plan for resilience alongside emissions reduction.

Is it more expensive to be green?

It is often thought that environmental initiatives cost more money, referred to as the "green premium." A systematic review published in The Lancet found that out of 57 studies reporting costs, 54 identified cost savings.

Sustainability and TIVA

Total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) has lower CO₂ emissions than volatile anaesthesia. There is debate around optimal FGF and FiO₂. A calculator has been designed to determine optimal settings depending on context.

Nitrous oxide transition project

The Children’s Hospital at Westmead has moved clinical nitrous oxide use to cylinders and is decommissioning pipeline infrastructure as part of its sustainability project. This demonstrates that paediatric centres can maintain optimal care while reducing emissions.

Joint Consensus Statement on the use of Sterile Gowns in Single-Shot Spinal Anaesthesia

The new joint consensus statement was developed jointly by multiple anaesthesia organisations including ANZCA.
