The faculty joined colleagues at the “Parliamentary Friends of Palliative Care” event at Parliament House to discuss improving pain management and palliative care for all Australians.

On 4 November, the faculty attended the "Parliamentary Friends of Palliative Care" event at Parliament House of Australia, where Palliative Care Australia and Painaustralia hosted discussions on improving pain management and palliative care for all Australians.

FPM Executive Director, Martina Otten and Director of Professional Affairs Associate Professor Mick Vagg, joined policymakers, clinicians and advocates from across Australia to discuss approaches to improving pain management for people receiving palliative care.

Discussions focused on timely assessment, equitable access to medicines and the importance of compassionate communication in supporting dignity and comfort at the end of life. Speakers reinforced that effective pain management is fundamental to maintaining dignity and quality of life for people receiving palliative care.

During the event, PCA launched its Strategic Plan 2026–2029, and Painaustralia introduced the My Pain assessment Communication Tool (MPaCT), highlighting ongoing national efforts to strengthen the quality of pain and palliative care in Australia.

The faculty remains committed to advancing compassionate, evidence-based care across the full continuum of pain management and to working collaboratively with partners across the sector to improve awareness, policy and practice for the benefit of all Australians.
