We've developed a short explainer video and an accompanying booklet to help explain perioperative medicine (POM).

ANZCA's Chapter of Perioperative Medicine has produced a short explainer video and an accompanying booklet to help explain perioperative medicine (POM).

A short video Perioperative medicine: The pathway to better surgical care and an accompanying booklet Perioperative medicine: A better experience for surgical patients have been developed to explain POM to those unfamiliar with this important area of healthcare.

The aim of these resources is to articulate the value of POM in clear, practical terms, highlighting better patient outcomes, more efficient care pathways and a more sustainable health system.

The animated video follows the journey of “Joe”, showing his experiences before he is managed by a perioperative medicine team and comparing it to how his hospital journey can be improved when the team becomes involved.

The booklet includes examples showing the benefits of POM in hospitals throughout Australia and New Zealand. It will be expanded on over time.

Advocacy for perioperative medicine remains a core focus, and these resources will be used to explain perioperative medicine to decision makers and stakeholders beyond our specialties.
