The Promoting Good Practice and Managing Performance Challenges in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine resource provides practical guidance to clinical leaders, supervisors, mentors, and colleagues in identifying, managing and supporting performance concerns in clinical practice.

This updated resource builds on the original 2017 version, with refreshed language and strengthened alignment to the Supporting Professionalism and Performance: A guide for anaesthetists and pain medicine physicians (2024).

It outlines key principles of professionalism and high-quality performance, and provides clear guidance on:

  • Identifying and responding to performance concerns.
  • Applying fair and transparent processes grounded in natural justice.
  • Supporting remediation pathways and professional development.
  • Navigating local and external management processes.

The resource has been developed to support consistency in practice across departments and to strengthen patient safety and practitioner wellbeing as central priorities.

How to access
The resource is available via the ANZCA website here and can be used alongside the Professionalism and Performance framework to support local processes and decision making.

Keen to learn more?
The resource will be shared with heads of departments and relevant groups, and promoted through ANZCA communications and library channels to support awareness and uptake. For further queries please contact the membership services team.
