Scope of clinical practice for specialist pain medicine physicians
The FPM Board approved PS16(PM) Scope of clinical practice for specialist pain medicine physicians (including its background paper PS16(PM)BP) for a six-month pilot period. The new statement will be piloted until 25 January 2027 and we welcome feedback during this time.
PS16(PM) Scope of Clinical Practice for SPMPs and its background paper outline the scope of practice for specialist pain medicine physicians (SPMPs) in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand and may also be applied in jurisdictions such as Singapore and Hong Kong where FPM-trained SPMPs practice and provide training within the FPM fellowship training program.
The professional document reinforces that while aspects of pain treatment are widely practiced by many healthcare professionals, the role of the SPMP is in providing specialist pain medicine care and management that encompasses the broadest and highest level of care, at an individual and societal level.
