Thanks to all our NAD26 champions
Happy National Anaesthesia Day! From foyer displays and equipment demos to morning teas and media interviews, hundreds of fellows and trainees from around Australia and New Zealand celebrated 180 years of modern anaesthesia today.
Media highlights
Our fasting and GLP-1 warning coverage began in early October with exclusive articles pitched to News Limited, which were syndicated to Australian print and online publications including The Herald Sun, Daily Telegraph, and Courier Mail.
Late last week, ABC News Breakfast did a live cross to Tanya at Wollongong Private Hospital. Excerpts from this were then used across the ABC News Channel that afternoon. Radio New Zealand also ran the ABC audio and article as they have a syndication agreement with the ABC.
Since then, Tanya has done two radio interviews; one with ABC Radio Breakfast Sydney (Craig Reucassel) and ABC Radio Breakfast Melbourne before her list started at 7.30am and another with ABC News Radio. ABC Brisbane Drive with Ellen Fanning and ABC Radio Newcastle also used audio grabs. She ended the week with an interview on the 2GB Radio Weekends program on Sunday with host Luke Grant for their weekly health segment.
Social media
Engagement on social media was really strong again this year thanks, in part, to having such great content. On National Anaesthesia Day alone, our Instagram content received 23,600 views and our Facebook page had 36,000 impressions. In addition to re-posting photos from participating hospitals, we also shared short video clips and quotes from our latest In Safe Hands community engagement campaign.
Our community engagement campaign continues to grow
Last year, we launched a new community engagement campaign called You're in safe hands, with the aim of raising awareness around anaesthesia and anaesthetists by sharing authentic stories.
Inspired by the efforts of the ANZCA Councillors in 2025, this year we asked the 2026 Emerging Leaders to talk to camera about what a day in the life of an anaesthetist involves; what they love most about their jobs; what they say and do to help patients relax; and what 'soft skills' make for a great anaesthetist.
We'd like to say a huge thanks to Dr Jayden Ball, Dr Natalie Botha, Dr Michael Carpenter, A/Prof Stefan Dieleman, Dr Jane Leadbeater, Dr Sarah Lee, Dr Linden Martyr, Dr Yinying (Sally) Tsang, and Dr Charlotte Wade for being the 'faces' of this year's campaign.
