SOT meeting and workshop
The Tasmania Supervisors of Training Committee held their July meeting at the ANZCA Tasmania office on Wednesday 23 July. Updates were provided from the DPA and a demonstration of the new “My Portfolio” was presented to the group. A focus session was then completed on supervisor and trainee welfare. The next committee meeting is scheduled at the Launceston General Hospital in November.
TASETN project
The FATES-funded Tasmanian Anaesthetic Education and Training Network (TASETN) project was born out of the need to support the delivery of quality anaesthetic education and training in Tasmania, particularly simulation-based learning. Pre-project resources and the number of qualified educators were low, and in a funding, personnel and time-poor environment, it was difficult to maintain momentum for a best practice simulation training program in all three hospitals.
FATES funding has enabled the TASETN to build a state-wide simulation education network by providing qualified in-house, home-grown educators with the support they need to deliver both technical and non-technical skills in a safe, risk-free environment, ultimately improving employee satisfaction, staff retention and patient outcomes.
To date, the FATES project has delivered the Royal Hobart Hospital, the Launceston General Hospital, and the North West Regional Hospital with nearly $250,000 worth of much needed anaesthetic simulation equipment to run regular whole-team, inter-professional and inter-departmental simulation education activities.
The funding has also provided upskilling of simulation educators in the form of six Graduate Certificates of Clinical Education for simulation leads and clinical nurse educators (CNEs), four ‘train-the-trainer’ workshops, and two faculty development and debriefing workshops which saw 21 extra simulation faculty members trained.
The investment that has seen the largest cost benefit as been the provision of three 0.5 FTE CNEs to support the simulation leads. The CNEs provide expert knowledge of the clinical environment to the education space to create realistic scenarios, and help bridge the theory-practice gap to ensure training is addressing real-time needs. They not only assist in the delivery of education activities, but ensure equipment is maintained and is fit-for-purpose, that records are kept of training activities, all quality and safety issues that are identified during training are actioned immediately, and communication is maintained.
Since their introduction to the network, the ability to run simulation training activities have increased dramatically, and they have seen a marked improvement in team collaboration during high-pressure emergency scenarios.
Funding for this project was due to end on 31 August 2025, however we have managed to secure an extension until 30 April 2026. As the CNEs are crucial to the simulation network’s sustainability, we are now working on an application to the Tasmanian State Government to provide funding for these positions post project end.
The results to date clearly show that the investment in simulation training in Tasmania, and the introduction of the CNEs to the network, has been highly beneficial to maintaining a skilled workforce, and that has a direct impact on clinical outcomes and patient care.

2025 Tasmania ACE Winter CME Meeting
The ANZCA Combined Tasmania Winter CME meeting was held on Saturday 23 August 2025 at Joseph Chromy Wines at Reilba in northern Tasmania. 60 delegates attended the meeting where they heard from a variety of speakers on topics such as social media addiction, creating an awake intubation course, drug disposal/N20 pipeline testing, pain management, prehabilitation, what’s new in regional anaesthesia, obstetrics, clinical burnout and mental health, and the art of veterinary anaesthesia. We wish to thank our workshop convenors for their time in putting together such a diverse meeting, and our speakers for providing an interesting and compelling array of topics.
2026 Tasmanian Anaesthetic Training Program interviews
Interviews for the 2026 TATP were conducted at the Tasmania ANZCA Office over two days, Tuesday 26 to Wednesday 27 August 2026. More than 40 interviews were conducted by consultants from the south, north and north west regions.
