Other ANZCA initiatives

Managed by the ANZCA Global Development Committee, we have a number of other initiatives to help support and build the anaesthesia and pain medicine workforce in western Pacific countries

Papua New Guinea

ANZCA has been working with the Society of Anaesthetists of Papua New Guinea (PNG), the medical university and hospitals for many years and over that time has built strong relationships based on mutual respect. ANZCA initiatives in PNG include:

  • In-country support for anaesthesia training and examinations including three to four-yearly teaching visits.
  • Prizes and awards in anaesthesia at the undergraduate, diploma and final master of medicine level.
  • Workshop, lecture and speaker support at the annual PNG Medical Symposium and Society of Anaesthesiologists meeting.

Timor Leste

In supporting Timor Leste to build their anaesthesia and pain medicine workforce, ANZCA supports a doctor from Timor Leste to undertake their master of medicine training in anaesthesia, at the Fiji National University in Dili.

Global Surgery and Anaesthesia in Africa

ANZCA supports a post graduate clinical research fellowship in Global Surgery and Anaesthesia in Africa. Based in South Africa and open to anaesthetists from African countries, the scholarship supports research that contributes to the inequity in access to safe and high-quality patient care.

Fund a Colleague’s Education

The World Federation of Society of Anaesthesiologists' (WFSA) Global Fellowship Program offers low cost, high quality training to anaesthetists across Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America to address the shortfall of skilled anaesthetists in lower income countries.

To help reach WFSA's goal of training 500 fellows and provide safer anaesthesia to over one million patients, ANZCA supports the Fund a Fellow intitiative and encourages others to consider funding a fellow. For further information, or to donate please visit the WFSA here.

Lifebox

Lifebox is a not-for-profit organisation that improves the safety and quality of surgical care in low-resource countries through the provision of pulse oximeters to hospitals.

Lifebox Australia and New Zealand was established in 2015 in partnership with Lifebox, as a joint, regional project developed to ensure access to life-saving monitoring during surgery, through the purchase and distribution of pulse oximeters to hospitals across the Asia Pacific region.
