Faulty co-axial (Bain) circuits and hypercapnia risk – cautionary note

Defects in co-axial (Bain) circuits have been known to occur and to cause patients to develop severe hypercapnia. Anaesthetists are strongly urged to always check the breathing system as outlined in PS31 Guideline on Checking Anaesthesia Delivery Systems and its accompanying background paper, with specific regard to the integrity of co-axial circuit, both visually and mechanically.

A case report and discussion of the issue is available here.
