The poster is a cognitive aid to raise awareness among operating room personnel of safe and minimal oxygen administration requirements for patients when procedures require the concurrent use of supplemental oxygen, fuel (for example, alcohol swabs), and an ignition source (for example, diathermy).
It is designed for placement in conspicuous locations in operating room environments to optimise patient safety.
The four organisations that collaborated in and endorsed the design of the poster – which was adapted from ANZCA’s professional guideline: PS55 Position statement on minimum facilities for safe administration of anaesthesia in operating suites and other anaesthetising locations 2021 – are the:
- Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.
- Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
- Australasian College of Peri-Anaesthesia Nurses.
- Australian College of Perioperative Nurses.
