Sandy Zalstein Award

Awarded to an ANZCA anaesthesia advanced trainee or provisional fellow dedicated to improving trauma services in Tasmania.

Overview

The annual ANZCA Sandy Zalstein Award was established in 2024 by the Zalstein family and the college through the ANZCA Foundation, in memory of Dr Sandy Zundel Wolf Zalstein.

Dr Sandy Zalstein was an ANZCA fellow who made significant contributions to anaesthesia and the infrastructure for trauma and emergency medicine in Tasmania. He was a staff specialist anaesthetist at Royal Hobart Hospital, Clinical Lead for Trauma, and the Director of Trauma Services for Tasmania. He had a long-held passion for the improvement of trauma services in Tasmania.

From 2014 to 2019, Sandy worked closely with various stakeholders for the inclusion of the helipad installation in the major redevelopment of the Royal Hobart Hospital. Sandy’s contribution to making the helipad infrastructure a reality is a legacy that will improve and save the lives of many Tasmanians long into the future.

The Tasmania Regional Committee will confer the prize annually. The prize will be awarded during the annual Summer/Autumn Tasmanian ACE CME Weekend (or similar event).
