Accreditation changes for anaesthesia and pain medicine training
Find out everything you need to know about upcoming changes to anaesthesia and pain medicine training settings accreditation.
In 2023, the National Health Practitioner Ombudsman (NHPO) released Processes for Progress – A roadmap for greater transparency and accountability in specialist medical training site accreditation. In response, the Australian Medical Council (AMC) has developed a common set of accreditation standards and procedures that all specialist medical colleges are expected to adopt. These reforms aim to improve consistency, transparency and collaboration across the 16 specialist medical colleges.
From 2027, ANZCA and FPM will transition to accrediting training settings against the AMC’s new standards. This transition will introduce strengthened accreditation practices, including a standardised risk matrix to support decision-making, consistent accreditation terminology, and enhanced procedural fairness processes. While the changes are not expected to significantly increase workload, training settings can expect a stronger focus on cultural safety and wellbeing, along with some changes to accreditation evidence requirements.
Our new project webpage will be the central source for all information related to this transition, including key milestones, guidance materials and ongoing updates as implementation progresses.
