The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) announces neuropathic pain as the theme for 2026.

The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) has designated 2026 as the Global Year for Neuropathic Pain, shining an international spotlight on a complex and often debilitating form of nerve-related pain that affects an estimated 580 to 830 million people worldwide.

Neuropathic pain occurs when disease or injury damages the nervous system, disrupting its normal function and causing ongoing pain. It is associated with common conditions such as sciatica and diabetes, as well as HIV, leprosy, traumatic nerve injuries, amputations, and conflict-related injuries. Despite its prevalence and impact on quality of life, neuropathic pain remains underdiagnosed, undertreated and frequently misunderstood, contributing to avoidable suffering globally.

The Faculty of Pain Medicine (FPM), alongside the Australian Pain Society and the New Zealand Pain Society, endorses the 2026 Global Year and encourages members and stakeholders to engage with the campaign throughout the year.

We invite you to:

  • Promote the 2026 Global Year theme within your workplace and networks

  • Download and share the official Global Year artwork

  • Access fact sheets and educational materials

  • Register for upcoming webinars
