The Chapter of Perioperative Medicine is excited to share a few highlights from trimester 1 (2025) of the POM course. It’s the first of its kind in the world, offering a blend of clinical immersion, theoretical studies, and in-person workshops.
The POM course is under way for year two! Last month, we held the in-person participant workshops for unit 1 (preoperative planning) and unit 2 (preoperative assessment) in Melbourne. The event brought together multiple specialty groups, including GPs, physicians, and anaesthetists from across New Zealand and Australia. Alongside the multidisciplinary collaboration, a highlight of the workshop was the simulation activity facilitated by the Pam McClean Centre where participants conducted a consult with a complex patient and their carer. This provided participants with opportunities to explore and engage in discussions related to the scope of perioperative assessments and explore different communication strategies.
Built on the ANZCA Perioperative Care Framework, the POM course is designed for ANZCA fellows and other post-fellowship specialists seeking to deepen their expertise in perioperative medicine while advancing leadership, teamwork, and advocacy skills to support coordinated patient care.
Through our grandparenting process, we have admitted 760 applicants as Graduates of the Chapter of Perioperative Medicine (GChPOM). Our graduates are eligible to be unit of study leads, supervisors, content reviewers, and assessors who, through their contributions, improve the educational offering of the course and advance perioperative medicine in Australia and New Zealand.
