2027 Fellowship opportunities for the ANZCA Course in Perioperative Medicine

Background

The Alan & Kate Gibson Fellowship aims to find emerging leaders in perioperative medicine and support medical specialists committed to advancing the field. Two fellowships will be awarded for the 2027 academic year, with one reserved for a clinician working in a regional or rural setting. The fellowship is made possible by the generous support of the Alan & Kate Gibson Foundation.

What each fellowship provides

• Full course fee support, covering the registration and completion fees for the ANZCA Course in Perioperative Medicine. 
• Coordinated access to Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre for the compulsory clinical immersion unit. 
• Up to $A3000 in reimbursable travel expenses for regional and interstate fellows attending the clinical immersion site (Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre). 
• Opportunities to connect with a network of past Alan & Kate Gibson fellows.

Clinical immersion

Fellows complete the clinical immersion component of Unit of study 3 – Optimisation at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne. This is a compulsory condition of the fellowship. Clinical immersion for the remaining five units of study may be completed at other sites. 

Who should apply?

Anaesthetists, surgeons, intensivists, physicians, and general practitioners with a strong interest in perioperative medicine and a commitment to improving patient outcomes are encouraged to apply. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements for enrolment in the ANZCA Course in Perioperative Medicine’s first trimester commencing February 2027.

How to apply?

Applicants must submit:

1. A completed POM Course Fellowship application form, together with the supporting documents listed in the form.   
2. A written statement (maximum 500 words) demonstrating how they will use the knowledge gained through the course to enhance perioperative care at their hospital, in alignment with ANZCA’s Standards for Perioperative Medicine.

Selection process

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an online interview in October 2026. 

Conditions of award

Having undertaken the ANZCA Course in Perioperative Medicine, fellowship recipients will need to write a report of 750-1000 words before they receive certification as a Graduate of the Chapter of Perioperative Medicine.
