Appointment of new GESC Chair – Dr Angela Marsiglio

We are delighted to share that Dr Angela Marsiglio (FANZCA, Vic) will be the next chair of the Gender Equity Sub‑committee (GESC).

Dr Marsiglio completed her anaesthesia training through the Northwestern scheme in Melbourne and undertook a paediatric anaesthesia fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital in 2016. Her strong interest in equity and social justice stems from a foundation in bioethics, which includes a masters from Monash University and a bioethics fellowship at Harvard Medical School. She lived and worked in the USA between 2016 and 2022, during the COVID pandemic and times of political and social unrest. These experiences have also shaped her views about social justice.

Since returning to Australia in 2022, she has contributed to several professional initiatives including the DEI statement by the Society for Paediatric Anaesthesia in New Zealand and Australia (SPANZA) and ANZCA’s Trauma Informed Care (TIC) working group. Dr Marsiglio has been an active member of the Women’s Empowerment and Leadership Initiative (WELI), benefiting from mentorship, networking and collaboration.

To support a smooth transition, Dr Greta Pearce (FANZCA, NZ) will continue to lead the committee’s work over the next few months, and we sincerely thank Dr Pearce for her ongoing commitment, leadership, and contributions during this period, as she supports Dr Marsiglio in progressively assuming responsibilities ahead of a formal handover.

This follows the completion of Dr Claire Stewart’s (FANZCA, NSW) term as chair of GESC in late 2025, and we would like to acknowledge and thank Dr Stewart for her significant dedication, thoughtful leadership, and the considerable time and effort she invested in advancing the committee’s work and priorities during her tenure.

ANZCA’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion continues to evolve through the framework, roadmap and engagement with fellows, trainees and SIMGs, with ANZCA’s DEI framework launched in the Autumn 2026 edition of the ANZCA Bulletin.
