Introducing ANZCA’s graduate and program outcomes

We’re proud to announce the upcoming launch of ANZCA’s new graduate and program outcomes – a major step forward in our commitment to excellence in anaesthesia education and practice.

The ANZCA graduate and program outcomes:

  • Define the values and capabilities expected of fellows.
  • Align training with contemporary healthcare needs.
  • Promote safe, ethical, culturally inclusive, and future-ready practice.
  • Reinforce existing training principles without introducing new requirements.
  • Provide a strong foundation for learning, assessment, and leadership.

In response to the Australian Medical Council’s 2023 directive, ANZCA has developed a comprehensive framework that defines what it means to be a fellow and how our training program supports that journey. Since September 2024, the Curriculum Review Sub-committee has worked closely with stakeholders across the profession to ensure these outcomes reflect the real-world expertise and values of ANZCA fellows.

What are graduate and program outcomes?

  • Graduate outcomes describe the essential skills, attributes, and professional standards expected of ANZCA fellows. They reflect who anaesthetists are, what they know, and what they do both at the completion of training and throughout their careers.
  • Program outcomes outline how these capabilities are developed during training. They guide curriculum design, teaching methods, and assessment strategies.

Together, these outcomes ensure our training program produces not only technically proficient anaesthetists, but also compassionate, adaptable professionals equipped to lead safe and effective care in complex healthcare environments.

What do these outcomes mean for you?

  • Trainees: You’re not being asked to learn anything new. These outcomes simply provide clearer language and structure around your existing training goals, helping you better understand your progress and purpose.
  • Supervisors and assessors: The outcomes offer a shared framework for consistent, meaningful feedback and assessment, making it easier to support trainee development.
  • Fellows and patients: These outcomes reaffirm ANZCA’s commitment to producing ethical, capable, and reflective specialists who are prepared to meet future challenges in anaesthesia.

In summary

The ANZCA graduate and program outcomes:

  • Define the values and capabilities expected of fellows.
  • Align training with contemporary healthcare needs.
  • Promote safe, ethical, culturally inclusive, and future-ready practice.
  • Reinforce existing training principles without introducing new requirements.
  • Provide a strong foundation for learning, assessment, and leadership.

What’s next?

The graduate and program outcomes are currently undergoing consultation across ANZCA’s committees and stakeholder groups. This collaborative process ensures the outcomes are robust, relevant, and reflective of the diverse perspectives within our profession.

We anticipate that the final version will be ready for presentation to ANZCA Council in early 2026. Once endorsed, these outcomes will be formally integrated into our training program and shared widely across the ANZCA community.

Stay tuned for updates as we move closer to this exciting milestone in anaesthesia education.
