From Trimester 3, 2025, revisions will be introduced to the POM course workshop structure to improve accessibility and flexibility for participants.
Overview
These changes aim to strengthen engagement with the course content and provide an enhanced learning experience across the full perioperative journey.
The updated workshop format aims to reduce scheduling and attendance constraints, making it easier for participants to balance study with professional commitments. Additionally, it has been aligned with the annual Perioperative Medicine Special Interest Group (POM SIG) meeting, strengthening connections with the broader community of practice.
These enhancements reflect our continued commitment to delivering a high-quality and responsive learning experience.
What's included in the POM Course workshop changes?
Untying the participant workshops from individual units of study
Workshops are no longer a required component for the completion of individual units of study. This change aims to reduce the inflexibility and allow participants to progress through academic components without being restricted by workshop scheduling or attendance.
Redesigned workshop structure
Workshops are restructured into a consolidated and streamlined format comprising:
- Two consecutive face-to-face days, scheduled immediately prior to the annual Perioperative Medicine Special Interest Group (POM SIG)meeting, and
- One online day, delivered virtually during the academic year.
- Participants must complete a minimum of two units of study before attending any course workshop. The face-to-face sessions will rotate with the changing location of the POM SIG meeting, improving geographical accessibility over time.
Completion requirements
To fulfil course requirements and be eligible to become a graduate of the Chapter of Perioperative Medicine (post nominals: GChPOM) participants must complete a total of three full day workshops (2 days face-to-face + 1 day online) within the four-year enrolment period. This provides greater flexibility while ensuring the full perioperative journey is addressed in an integrated and practical format.
The above changes are reflected in the updated ANZCA Regulation 45 and Course in Perioperative Medicine Handbook.
For participants enrolled prior to 2026 the following workshop requirements and exemptions apply:
Units of study completed | Workshop requirements | Action required |
1 unit | Not yet eligible to attend | Must complete 1 additional unit of study to be eligible to attend course workshops including the online workshop. |
2 units | Eligible to attend course workshops, including the online one-day workshop | Register for course workshops |
3 or more units | Exempt and not eligible to attend workshops | No further action required |
As a result, no workshop will run in Trimester 3, 2025. For further information please consult the ANZCA Website and FAQ document.
To support supervisors through the change process and help address any questions, a dedicated information session is scheduled on 4 September 2025.
