TopMedTalk’s new Perioperative Profiles debuts with Professor Paul Myles, reflecting on his career, research milestones, and the future of perioperative trials.

TopMedTalk has launched a new series, Perioperative Profiles, spotlighting the professional and personal journeys of leading researchers in perioperative medicine. The first episode, recorded at the Evidence Based Perioperative Medicine (EBPOM) World Congress in London, features Professor Paul Myles, Director of Research in Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the Alfred Hospital and Head of Department at Monash University.

Professor Myles reflects on his early ambition to be a country GP, the formative year he spent in the UK that ignited his passion for anaesthesia, and the challenges he faced building a research career in a specialty not traditionally known for clinical trials. He went on to establish landmark multi-centre studies and the ANZCA Clinical Trials Network, which has since recruited more than 65,000 patients and secured more than $70 million in funding.

The conversation also explores the balance between career and family, the importance of mentorship and collaboration, and the future of perioperative research through adaptive platform trials.
